I realize that you are concentrating on facial expressions, though that is no "Traditional Maori haka", rather at least one individual is adorned with Black Power gang moko (tattoos).

I'm fairly sure that people having their portrait taken in the 1800s were instructed not to smile, though can't find a reference.
